Last year’s Sole Destroyer was my first ever OCR so even though I had my first ultra race- 12 hours in the Clumber night run, (which was unfortunately cancelled 2 week before hand) planned for the following weekend I wanted to take part to mark the occasion but opted for the 5k rather than the 10k.
I started steadily but still found myself at the front and after a run around a grassy field and up and down some hills I was well clear before reaching the first section of obstacles including some standard hay bale jumps and a cargo net crawl. There was quite a bit of water wading from then on as well as some high walls to get over but most of the race was more of a cross country than an OCR and being so far ahead I was able to relax and enjoy the run before climbing one final wall and coming through the finish line almost 2 and a half minute ahead of 2nd place.
It was nice to have enough time to spare to pick my little girl up and run the last 50m with her and great to mark my first year of obstacle course racing with a win. It was also pleasing to see my PJR team mates retain the team title I’d been a part of last year.
